Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutations are rare causes of maternally inherited genetic diseases that typically manifest as encephalomyopathies (brain and muscle disorders). Through manipulations of oocytes, it is possible to replace mutant mitochondria with normal donor mitochondria prior to in vitro fertilization. This mitochondrial replacement therapy (MRT) has been approved by the UK Parliament and is being considered by the FDA. Drs. Michio Hirano, Dieter Egli, and Mark Sauer will discuss their perspectives of MRT.
