Ethical Concerns about the Use of Genetic Risk Metrics for Suicide

March 20, 2023 - 12:00 pm

Anna R. Docherty, PhD, Assistant Professor, Department of Psychiatry, Huntsman Mental Health Insittute, University of Utah

The genetic complexity of psychiatric conditions makes it difficult for providers and the public to understand the clinical implications (or lack thereof) of genetic data. Low population base rates of extreme outcomes, like suicide, can increase the difficulty of evaluating clinical utility. This seminar will provide discussion of the empirical data, and risks of commercialization and clinical use of genetic risk scores.
