Just Another Biomarker? – The ELSI of Polygenic Scores in the Clinic, Especially for Psychiatric Conditions

November 21, 2022 - 12:00 pm

Anna Lewis, PhD, Research Associate, Edmond and Lily Safra Center for Ethics, Harvard University Genomes2People Research Program, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, MA

The clinical use of polygenic scores is sometimes described as (almost) just another biomarker. How do ethical, legal and social (ELSI) issues contribute to an assessment of this claim? In the context of the return of monogenic results, an array of ELSI issues have been identified and to some extent addressed. Dr. Lewis will start by assessing which of the ELSI issues from the monogenic world carry over to the polygenic world, and then identify some additional issues that arise in the polygenic context. She will close by naming some specific issues with using polygenic scores for psychiatric conditions, with a view to discussion.
